We just got the Upton Bass at City College. The sound and workmanship of the
bass is impressive, especially in the price range.
This is a bass I can recommend to all my students.

How goes it...... Here are a couple of shots from this past weekend in Appleton
,Wisconsin with The Branford Marsalis Quartet. Been taking shots
recently.....none have really turned out....as you can see the band...(and I)
move quite a bit. The shots from the symphony gig didnt really turn out....but I
am waiting to hear from them to see if they (the symphony)took some shots. Will
be out again this weekend......so we'll try some more. In terms of the
bass......everything is working out fine....Actually,branford called me the
other day to comment on the fact that he dug the sound of the
instrument.....even though I have been complaining about my string
dilemma.....Not the UB Blacks per se....I just put some obligato's on there and
I am just having a hard time switching from gut.....although I am loving the
arco possibilities.Actually ended up putting the UB "g" back on.

What's new? ... I've started playing the Upton Hawkes Hybrid double bass, a
fantastic instrument made in Mystic, CT, by Gary Upton at Upton Bass. I had been
looking around for a "new sound" even though I had been playing my vintage Juzek
since 1975(!) A couple of my students had been using Upton basses and I was very
impressed with (and a bit jealous of) their sound. So I decided to try one out
for myself and loved the punchy, wooden sound and responsiveness right from the
start! I got hooked and have enjoyed playing the Upton Hybrid on all my gigs
since then. I hope you get a chance to hear me playing it soon and, if you're a
bassist, try one out at Gary's picturesque shoppe in Mystic, right next to the
famed Mystic Seaport Village.

I just brought home my new Hawkes laminate bass from Upton Bass and it is
absolutely terrific. My other bass is a 1907 Hawkes Concert model which I often
use for traditional jazz. It’s a great bass but it has its drawbacks that Gary’s
bass really compensates for. The Upton bass has a huge sound first and foremost
but that’s not its only astonishing characteristic. The playability, response,
warmth, and setup are all truly top-notch. The notes seem to just leap from the
instrument with a clarity and singing quality that helps me to express myself
more fluidly. This bass has an overall flexibility that allows me to use it in
diverse settings. Whether it’s a conventional jazz gig, a more pop-oriented set,
subbing on Broadway or performing a sonata- Gary’s bass can do it all. Everyone
at Upton Bass is extremely knowledgeable and helpful and the luthiers really
take great care in maintaining the highest quality of work. If something isn’t
up to their rigorous standards, they won’t just let it “slip by”, they’ll do it
right instead. The look of the bass is beautiful with a gorgeous varnish and a
pleasing and comfortable shape. While playing the bass at a Jazz at Lincoln
Center Professional Development today I was complimented on both the look and
the sound of this superb instrument. Thank you, Gary, for a great bass!

Best New Bass on the market. I've had mine for about two months and it is
everything I thought it would be. Everywhere I go people want to know what it
is. Everytime a soundman works with it and the Revolution pickup, they claim
it's the best sounding bass and pickup they've ever worked with. I played the
Opry along with 10-12 other professional bluegrass bass players at the IBMA
awards in October, and the soundguy claimed that my raw signal, no preamp, was
by far the cleanest, richest sound he got all night. The other players were
using 40's Kays, hundred year old German solid top and the like, none of them
had anything on my Hawkes. I recommend this instrument to everyone I meet.
