The UB Bostonian Double Bass was conceived at the 2009 International Society of Double Bassists convention at State College, Pennsylvania while World-Renowned Jazz Bassist and Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of North Texas, Lynn Seaton and Upton Bass String Instrument Co. President and Founder, Gary Upton Birkhamshaw were playing and discussing the various instruments we had created for the convention. Starting with a blank sheet of paper and going through Lynn's preferences with each model, the outline of what would become our NEW UB
Bostonian Concert Double Bass was born!
The starting point was the Gamba model that we made for Gary Karr and was on display
for the first time publicly at the show in the award winning double bass made by Upton Basses own head luthier, Eric Rene Roy. The ergonomics of the Karr outline
coupled with the raised over-stand and projection made an instrument that was extremely accessible throughout the entire fingerboard. Mr. Seaton did not find the
extreme taper of the Karr ribs to be a benefit to his style and elected to keep our standard full depth ribs. Also on display was a Professor Poplar Deluxe , and with it's warm, rich tone that sounded like a bass that was a century old rather than just days, Gary and Lynn decided that a fully carved Poplar double bass would be the best route to go.
The result uttered it's first notes four months later and it was well worth the wait. The UB "BOSTONIAN" Double Bass is sure to take it's seat in any orchestra or jazz club! Classic tone, playability, affordability and the peace of mind of a new instrument with a warranty is sure to grab the attention of any serious double bassist.
This bass has a huge, dark tone with plenty of volume and punch and is very
light weight. Why struggle with unsatisfactory tone any longer?
Starting at $8,500

"I love the bass!!!!! It has really opened up over the last few months. The bass projects extremely well acoustically. I amplify it with a Shure Beta 56 microphone and/or a David Gage Realist pickup. The instrument is easy to play with a clear and very even sound in all registers and all across the fingerboard. The deep chocolate color shows the beautiful details of the intricately carved instrument. Thank you for such an incredible instrument."

I recently had a chance to really hear my new bass performed. I loaned it to the bass player for the acclaimed group Alarm Will Sound for a concert they gave at the Missouri Theatre as part of Mizzou New Music initiative summer festival. it was amazing the resulting sound. Miles the bassist said the sound improved every day of practice into the concert. I told him to visit your shop as he is looking for a new traveling bass.

I really like my new bass. The first week I had it I took it to my bass lesson from a Professor of String Bass. I didn't have a lesson as she wouldn't put it down for an hour. I play in three orchestras and the violins have commented about it's great sound. It plays very easy, easy, easy. The only issue I've had is relearning how to play softly. It has such great resonance and a pure sound that it plays "loud". I have alot of jealous fellow string bass players.

P.S. I'm 63 and after 50 years of playing I finally have a great bass.
