*From Martin:
This is my second bass from Upton and all I can say is I'm totally blown away. After visiting the shop last year and eyeing some of the wood and finish options, I decided to upgrade my Karr Hybrid model (a beautiful bass to be sure) to a Deluxe Hybrid with maple back and sides, antiqued finish and violin corners. Eric worked with me on the design and the resulting instrument has exceeded all of my expectations. I had the chance to play the new bass out for the first time last Saturday and the tone was beautiful, big and round with lots of sustain. Perfect for the jazz style I play. Everyone in the band complimented me on how pretty the bass was as well as how wonderful it sounded. I drove to the Upton shop in Stonington to pick up the bass, and Eric, Gary, Jack and Aubrey were very attentive and helped me out with the setup and string choices. Decided to go with Gary's "blended" string set as for my style of playing they provided me with just the right blend of complex tone, sustain and bow-ability. Thanks Gary! Eric even took me out for dinner afterwards. Truly the nicest folks you would ever want to meet and do business with. If you are in the market for a custom bass, uniquely built to your specifications, look no further than Upton. By the way, my bass is the one featured in the photographs of the UB Deluxe Hybrid on the Upton web site.

I purchased a pre-owned UB 5-string hybrid flatback bass in August of 2011. It arrived in Detroit with a high C string and the wonderful C extension. If I only played jazz on it I would have kept that configuration. However I really wanted to articulate the low notes, so I ordered an Eva Pirazzi low B through Dave. The bass plays and sounds great for both jazz and orchestral formats! But the final test; -recording ocurred last Monday. The Revolution pick-up alone provided amazing clarity. Great product!

Everything from the time I ordered my bass and first spoke to Gary to playing my bass now has been a great experience. I felt comfortable with my bass being made at Upton from the very start. I can't believe how much attention they put in to making this bass "my bass."
I received my bass a week ago, and I'm still astonished. It has such a huge sound and the tone is even and clear across the entire range. The low notes have amazing punch and definition. As requested, the bass plays amazingly with both jazz and classical. It growls with my walking lines and produces round, full orchestral pizzicato. The cosmetic detail is also flawless. Beautifully flamed sides and spruce top. It looks and sounds like I paid a lot more for it. I looked at a lot of different basses and companies, and I'm so glad I went with Upton. I study music, and the whole music department is impressed/jealous of my bass. I can't wait to hear my instrument's sound mature as time goes on.
To Gary and the whole Upton staff, I cannot thank you enough for making my instrument and being so helpful along the way.

Wow! I got the Hawkes Laminated bass and it is everything that I imagined and more. The craftsmanship is second to none. The fact that you order a bass, sight unseen, and it is perfect says a lot. Every step was a pleasure. Josh was such a cool person to deal with. I never felt that I was bothering him. If you're thinking about buying a new bass and are having trouble deciding, get an Upton. I cannot say enough about your company. Thank you for your attention to detail, thank you for caring about what you do, and thank you for making an instrument that I will cherish forever...all the best.

I have been playing my Upton Hawkes Hybrid since mid-September --
about 5 months -- and I've gotta say it has become a big part of my
life. I thought my vintage Juzek was a great bass (and it is) but I
was looking around for a new sound: more punchy, louder and well-
defined, particularly in the mid- and upper-ranges. I found what I
was looking for in the Upton: a bass with very strong character
throughout its range, yet remarkably easy to play. The action and
setup provided by Jack at the Shop has enabled me to accompany, solo
and play arco in jazz settings with more control and ease. The Hybrid
practically bows itself! I never have to worry about being heard,
and that makes it easier to 'lay back' a bit. Besides the virtues of
the instrument itself, I have to compliment Gary and his staff on the
professional and courteous service they've provided to me, and to my
4-5 students who have been Upton's customers as well. Keep up the
good work, Upton Bass!
