An Upton Double Bass features our own unique design,
constructed under traditional methods, and using the finest quality
materials. Our skilled luthiers customize each double bass to your requested
set-up specifications. We offer several upgrade features and accessories,
allowing you to custom create the instrument you’ve always wanted.
The UB Professor Deluxe Double Bass, also
known as the “Flat-Back” bass, is an exclusive UB designed instrument
constructed to the exact specifications of Upton Bass String Instrument Company
and setup per player to meet your performance demands. An extraordinarily dark
and rich sounding double bass, the Professor is known for its phenomenal volume
and projection, with tonal color abound. The UB Professor Deluxe is a more tonally
dynamic bass than our laminate and hybrid models, and has been known to hold its
own unamplified with jazz trios in small clubs. The top is hand-carved from
select German spruce, while the flat back and sides are
quarter-sawn, well-seasoned highly flamed maple.
See how we designed it here!
Originally, the UB Professor Deluxe was a special order instrument
for Gary which, when he wasn’t playing it, was left at the Mystic shop. When
customers inquired about the flat-back, we simply replied, "Oh, That’s Gary's bass".
Maybe it was the looks...maybe it was the sound...maybe it was the unique UB
model. Whatever the reason, people loved to buy Gary's bass! So, it would sell and then he would commission a new one. In fact, we’ve sold
Gary’s bass so many times, he refuses to give up his current one! So, if you
want "Gary's bass", you’ll have to settle for a newly commissioned one. However, he’d be happy to
break it in on a few gigs for you, if you’d like!
Who is Gary
you ask??? Double Bassist, Luthier, and Founder of Upton Bass String Instrument
Company! The UB Professor Deluxe is
setup to perfection. Gary wouldn't have it any other way!

Varnish, does it matter?
YES! The varnish on all Upton Basses is a proprietary Linseed Oil mixture
that is applied in a traditional manner that accentuates the natural beauty of
the wood and the tone. Hundreds of years of great
instrument making cannot be wrong! Our varnish is not a heavily sprayed
lacquer or a overly delicate spirit finish that is found on factory basses from Europe,
Asia and America. Our varnish is the same varnish luthiers use on
double basses that cost $25,000 or MORE!
Our varnish is hand
applied by our artisans (actual Upton Bass employees!) in our Stonington,
Connecticut workshop! We have tested our varnish in the most extreme situations
and are 100% confident in it's durability. Each bass, just like a piece of
wood, has it's own organic fingerprint and will take on the varnish differently,
and imprint the individual
characteristics of your bass. While we go to great lengths to
get a consistent look from bass to bass, your bass will be YOUR bass, and
no other Upton Bass will be identical!
Real inlayed purfling & individual German made Rubner tuners add to this basses appeal. We have reversed the orientation of the tuners to lessen the tension on the E string (if you want the traditional setting, we can do that to...remember, although it is an Upton Bass, it's
YOUR bass!). We cut "pockets" under the tabs and worm gears to relieve stress on the plates and allows for smoother tuning...you may never see them...but they are there, and for a reason. We don't skip steps! So many of our competitors cut costs by using cheaply made tuners that turn roughly,
easily bend, the plating flakes off, or no thought was given to their placement and installation. Why skimp on such important things? No corners have been cut in our bass's construction or finishing! German "hat peg" tuners can be installed...inquire for upgrade fees!
We fit our own ebony fingerboards that are cut to our specs. Thick, straight grained and jet black...you won't find a higher quality ebony board anywhere. We actually wholesale supply our boards to other shops...they are that good!
Our solo extended fingerboard is a stock option (exclusive UB feature...nowhere else is this available without paying extra customization fees!). Regular fingerboards can still be installed...just ask!
High quality endpins are installed on all of our basses. Thick, solid ebony collars do not warp or crack like the ebonized hardwood endpins on our competitors basses. Threaded tips and steel reinforced rubber caps ensure years of performance.
Already have a bass with an E-flat neck??? Want your Upton Bass to have

Upton Bass setups include:
♪Top quality endpins are fit with removable metal threaded rubber tips.
♪ Your choice of strings (up to $140.00). Our luthiers can recommend string choices based on your style of play. Upton Bass has access to just about every string being offered today. Just because it is not listed on our site does not mean we can't get it for you.
♪ Stock Upton Bass bridges,
made by our own Upton Bass luthiers, are meticulously carved, fitted, and tonally adjusted for each individual bass. The top radius of each bridge is custom carved to meet the specifications of your playing style. Once a bridge meets our standards, it is then branded with our logo. Adjusters are installed at an additional charge of $50.00.
♪ English style grade "AAA" ebony tailpieces are hung with Clef HITEC tailpiece cable. This lightweight, flexible cable is stronger than steel! After-lengths are carefully calculated and adjusted for the best tone.
♪ Seasoned European spruce sound posts are hand
turned by us and fit by us to ensure each bass reaches its maximum tonal capabilities. Our sound posts fit 100%. No bevel! No domes!
♪ Fingerboards of the highest grade ebony are dressed and polished to perfection.
♪ Ebony nuts are brought to exact tolerances. Other than the bridge, the nut is one of the most important (and most overlooked) aspects of your setup. Incorrect string angles can prematurely break strings and cause buzzes. Incorrect spacing can make it difficult to play and grooves that are not
well formed and lubricated can damage the strings. Incorrect string heights can not only make your bass difficult to play, but may cause long term medical problems!
♪ Each bass is played by our staff. If something is not quite right, it is done again until it is. Simply put, the level and quality of service we offer is second to none!
