Our Gary Karr model Hybrid double bass is perhaps the best hybrid double bass available today, so how do you make it better?
We started with the soul of an instrument and added a Deluxe Spruce Top. By comparison, our Standard Spruce Tops are a full arch with no re-curve coming into the purfling channel, and the graduations are predetermined numbers based on coupling our theories on tone with the need for durability, and while our Standard Spruce Tops add a level of depth and tonal colors not possible with a laminated top, so much more can be achieved with one on one attention from our luthiers. A Deluxe Spruce Top is just that! First, our luthiers select the "creme de la creme" of our tops. Each plate is then carefully hand graduated by our award winning head luthier, Eric Rene Roy, for optimum tone. The arching is low and powerful with a strong recurve into the purfling, allowing for a plate that can freely "pump" and produce wonderfully rich low tones on the E with a balance throughout the register ending in a sweet, clear note on the G string.
The insides of the bass are brought to the finest tolerances with light, well thought out blocks and braces. Every effort is made to reduce weight, making for a resonant instrument that makes you wonder if it really does have laminated ribs and back!
The UB Karr Deluxe Hybrid Double Bass is finished in a nicely antiqued varnish to give the look of an older instrument. Even the brass fittings are antiqued! A Preserve Saddle and our extra long ebony Solo fingerboard are included!
