While our "competitors" try to be the lowest priced Engelhardt dealers, we are the best setup Engelhardt dealer! Will you pay more for an Upton Bass setup Engelhardt ES9 Swingmaster? That depends on how you look at it! Our competitors offer low prices on factory direct basses. They never even see (or touch) the bass they sold you! It is then up to you to either play the horrible factory setup or bring it to a luthier to have it done right. The cost of upgraded parts and labor alone could easily run you another $1,000.00.
Upton Bass buys Engelhardt basses direct from the factory. Upon arrival in our Mystic shop we fully inspect them and return anything that does not meet our specifications. Only once the bass meets our approval does it move on to be given the well know Upton Bass Setup. You would be surprised at the amount of double bass dealers who have done very good jobs at marketing the setup's they perform...and they don't even do the work themselves! They sub-contract it out to local luthiers who perform the actual work. We upgrade EVERY component of the bass (see below for the full listing). From perfectly fit soundposts and bridge feet to meticulously planed fingerboards...the setup work we perform is the same high quality work that would be done on any bass that walks in our door, regardless of value or historical importance. You can be sure that your Upton Bass Engelhardt will play better than any bass you have played before.
Now, we talk all about the setup...but hardly make mention of the bass itself. We won't tell you this is the best made, best sounding laminated bass on the market, but it is solidly built and has proven it's reliability over the 30+ years of it's production. If you are looking into Engelhardt Swingmaster basses...you know what you want. If you want to buy an Engelhardt, and don't want to fuss with getting it setup and accessorized AFTER you get it in your door...you can buy with the knowledge that you will have one of the best playing and sounding Engelhardt's out there.
We Guarantee you can't purchase an Engelhardt with a better setup for a better price anywhere, period!

Upton Bass setups include:
♪ High quality, heavy duty German made ebony endpins are fit with removable metal threaded rubber tips.
♪ Hand made Stock Upton Bass bridges, are meticulously fitted, carved, and tonally adjusted for each individual bass. The top radius of each bridge is custom carved to meet the specifications of your playing style. Once a bridge meets our standards, it is then branded with our logo. Adjusters can be installed at an additional charge of $50.00.
♪ English style grade "AAA" ebony tailpieces are hung with Clef HITEC tailpiece cable. This lightweight, flexible cable is stronger than steel! After-lengths are carefully calculated and adjusted for the best tone and string feel.
♪ Seasoned European spruce sound posts are hand selected and fit by us to ensure each bass reaches its maximum tonal capabilities. Our sound posts fit 100%. No bevels! No domes!
♪ Fingerboards are dressed and polished to perfection.
♪ Ebony nuts are brought to exact tolerances. Other than the bridge, the nut is one of the most important (and most overlooked) aspects of your setup. Incorrect string angles can prematurely break strings and cause buzzes. Incorrect spacing can make it difficult to play and grooves that are not correct can damage the string as well as take away from your basses tone. Incorrect string heights can not only make your bass difficult to play, but may cause long term medical problems!
♪ Each bass is played by our staff. If something is not quite right, it is done again until it is. Simply put, the level and quality of service we offer is second to none!

I am reviewing this bass for two reasons: 1. My extreme pleasure with this instrument; 2. My total satisfaction with the service received from all at Upton Bass String Instrument Co.
The Engelhardt ES 9 Swingmaster is in itself an eye-catching instrument with its unique blonde finish. What surprised me the most was the size of the instrument which although listed as a 3/4 size instrument, it actually compares to a 7/8ths sized instrument. This translates into a large, warm, rich sound that is made by this instrument. For my repertoire which mainly consists of jazz stnadards, swing, and blues, this is a wonderful instrument. In fact, my band members made the comment that it sounded every bit as good as my fully carved bass that is 4 times the value of this instrument.
-Any instrument of this nature requires skilled, experienced technicians for a proper setup. Gary and his staff took the time with my to learn everything about my playing preferences and requirements so that the instrument could be setup properly-and indeed that is what occurred! This workmanship that Upton put into this instrument to convert it from a stock item into a fully customized instrument which sounds great and plays with extreme ease in my opinion is second to none.
I also made the decision to purchase the Upton Bass bag for this wonderful instrument, and again, this turned out to be a wise decision. This bass bag is phenomenal and I believe is a must for anyone who values their instrument, and wises to be able to transport these giants with extreme ease.
I live in Canada, which poses its own set of problems when dealing with shipping matters. Upton packed the bass very well, and shipped it in a manner that allowed rapid delivery to me.
To say it all, if you are considering the purchase of a bass, look no further than Upton bass. This company is very knowledgeable, professional, highly experienced, reliable, trustworthy, and a pleasure with which to do business. Many thanks Upton bass!

A few words from our customers about our setups:
I finally got my new bass to my teacher, and he was very impressed. Some of his words:
1. "Man, that's a nice adjustable bridge"
2. "You've got a great tail piece and cable here; this isn't the cheap stuff"
3. "They did a great job on the neck"
4. "That endpin is very nice. I'd like to have one of those"
5. "Those guys have really got something going on up there; I'll buy my next bass from them as soon as I sell my Kay. I'm going to recommend them to my other students."
All in all, he was very impressed with your setup work and the sound of the bass in general.
Thanks again for a great price on a great instrument. At first I wasn't sold on the importance of the "Upton setup", but I'm convinced now that without it, I might as well be playing cardboard box with strings stretched across it. This instrument has inspired me to write and rehearse more often and more effectively.
You'll be getting my business in the future.

Hi Gary
Sorry its taken me a bit longer to get round to writing this review for your web-site about my Engelhardt Swingmaster - but its been that hard to tear my self away from it!
I would like to say that I absolutley love this new bass and it sounds and plays like I always wanted a bass to do - something I doubt would have happened had it not had the benefit of the proper Upton set-up and workshop attention !
I would also like to say the customer service from Upton is first class and I really valued the chance to talk to you and your team before and during the time my bass was on order.
Upton Bass scores:
5/5 for techincal set-up/quality of workmanship on the instrument
5/5 for customer support/advice
5/5 as a great place to buy a bass (even if you live in the UK!)
Would recommend Upton Bass to any one playing the double bass
Thanks again
