Every bassist, from serious amateur to professional player, should benefit from the concepts and ideas presented. Teachers, especially, will appreciate the practical approach and the careful analysis given to each aspect of the double bass. The book avoids perpetuating dogma by seeking flexible ? that is, pragmatic ? solutions to instrumental challenges presented to the modern bassist.
The 314 pages are mostly text, but include many photos, diagrams, tables, musical examples, and an extensive annotated bibliography. This book will provide double bassists the tools for discovering solutions to most of the technical problems associated with their instrument.

I have been working alone learning arco technique with my Ergo electric upright bass (EUB) for a couple of years now and was sorely in need of an excellent explanatory text. In my area, there really are no double bass teachers at all, and as a 25+ year electric bass player I have the determination and gumption to go it on my own. Dr Morton's CONCEPTS AND IDEA is a fantastic resource: explains all aspects of developing a solid double bass technique. The arco descriptions and explanations are exceptional. This is one of the best double bass texts that I have found out there, Dr Morton does not seem to take anything for granted and provides clear and helpful explanation, illustration and photography.
