This was a hard bass for us to access province. This bass clearly
showing signs of being what is called a "Bohemian" instrument (region of the
Czech Republic). Age is a bit harder...we were leaning towards c1890...and
we hate to use tuners in our province calculations...but in this case we have a
John Juzek double bass that has been aged by at least three double bass
specialists over the years to being made c1920 that has the exact same tuners.
If tuners are to be a factor in determining age, we cannot date it as old as we
think it may be. No labels or inscriptions within.
Regardless of province, this is a fine double bass that would make any
bassist happy. Warm rich tones great for jazz or classical with excellent
projection. The back is a two piece book match of wide flame not normally
found in double bass size. Large, wide flame is usually what is found in
the lower region of the Carpathian Mountain Range, getting close to Italy
(typically called "Bosnian Maple". The thinner the flame, the more
northern it's growing range is, think of Poland and getting into Russia).
The price of this bass is based on it's quality and tonal qualities.
Please call to discuss or audition this fine double bass.
