Upton Bass String Instrument Co. is a working lutherie with original, repair, and restoration work being completed every day. We use a lot of wood; and we are always buying more. Our founder, Gary Upton Birkhamshaw has become quite the connoisseur of aged, well seasoned maple & spruce tonewood, and our collection is impressive.

Upton Bass has also established a good network of Indian and African sources of ebony. Our fingerboards are our own design and are bought by double bass luthiers all over the world. These are the same fingerboards used on every UB bass we sell.
