Having your Double Bass setup by Upton Bass ensures you of a great sounding, well playing bass. This process takes the time and knowledge of an experienced luthier. Every bass setup is supervised or completed and always played an inspected by Gary Upton, Double Bassist, Luthier & Founder of Upton Bass. We stress that our double bass setup can be compared to very few others in the business. We specialize in the double bass and are proud of the dedicated service we provide. Your bass is always thoroughly checked and played through before we place it in your hands.
The Upton Bass setup includes, but is not limited to: Professional installation of a well figured and seasoned bridge (with adjusters upon request $50) Planing and full dressing of the fingerboard to provide you with a non-buzzing, smooth, playable neck. Replacement and tonal positioning of a seasoned sound post Re-hanging and tonal adjustment of the tailpiece with an Clef HiTec tail-gut. Adjustment of the string nut for correct left hand string height, replacement of end pin with a high quality end pin.
All of our Double Basses can be setup to suit your playing style, contact us to discuss the specifics.
Upton Bass setups include:
* High quality, heavy duty endpins with removable metal threaded rubber tips are hand-fit to each instrument .
* Top quality, seasoned Stock Upton Bass bridges are meticulously fitted, carved, and tonally adjusted for each individual bass. The top radius of each bridge is custom carved to meet the specifications of your playing style. Once a bridge meets our standards, it is then branded with our logo. Adjusters are installed at no addition charge (a $50 value).
* English style grade "AAA" ebony tailpieces are hung with Clef HITEC tailpiece cable. This lightweight, flexible cable is stronger than steel!
* Seasoned European spruce sound posts are hand selected and fit by us to ensure each bass reaches its maximum tonal capabilities. Our sound posts fit 100%. No bevel! No domes!
* Fingerboards of the highest grade ebony are dressed and polished to perfection. Depending on the style of music you play, we can put the radius best suited to that style on your bass.
* Ebony nuts are brought to exact tolerances. Other than the bridge, the nut is one of the most important (and most overlooked) aspects of your setup. Incorrect string angles can prematurely break strings and cause buzzes. Incorrect spacing can make it difficult to play and grooves that are not correct can damage the string as well as take away from your basses tone. Incorrect string heights can not only make your bass difficult to play, but may cause long term medical problems!
* Each bass is played by our staff. If something is not quite right, it is done again until it is. Simply put, the level and quality of service we offer is second to none!
